I moved to China from Charlotte, North Carolina, USA in August, 2006 and began teaching in Wuxi, Jiangsu at an international school. After one year in Wuxi, I moved to Changzhou, Jiangsu and began teaching senior high school students. The program I taught was the Advanced Placement Cambridge University program at Changzhou International School. I taught there for two years and in June, 2009, I moved to Chengdu and began teaching the PGA program to senior 1,2,3 students at TangWai, Foreign Language Experimental School.
I really enjoy teaching the students here at Tang Wai school and watching them make progress towards their ultimate goal of studying abroad at a university in the USA, England or Australia. I remember the first day in senior one class this year. No one would speak. I was afraid they didn’t know any English. Now, they all can speak well and I have fun teaching them. Oh, I must thank them for teaching me many Chinese words. My senior 2 class this year was my first senior one class last year. I can now see the improvement they have made in English and their different subjects. My senior 3 student will be going to America soon to a university and I wish her good luck in her studies and career.
School Food: I actually do like the school food although sometimes it is very spicy. I still have not tried “rabbit,” Tùzǐ.
Special things:
Walking to my class in the morning, I get to see the primary students. I enjoy watching them play and march in line following their teacher.
PGA Staff: Ms. Zeng, Ms. Zou and Arthur Zhang have all been helpful in making my life comfortable in Chengdu. I thank them.
My secret
In 2006, in the USA, I was a real estate agent and mortgage loan officer. I could see the financial crisis was beginning to happen and I wanted to make a career change. I love to travel and I started to research the mysterious and ancient country called China. I decided that Chengdu would be by choice city to live and work. I sold my house, car and furniture and moved to China. It took three years to finally make it to Chengdu. I had read in a travel book that once you move to Chengdu, you won’t want to leave. I think they are right. If the pandas live here, it must be a good place!
My goal: Retire in Hawaii.
Things I like to do:
** Travel to Chengdu every weekend to shop and eat at Chinese and Western restaurants.
** Go to Starbucks (Xīngbakè) to read, do school work, surf the internet and meet Chengdu people and foreigners. I have met many Chengdu people at Starbucks that are now my friends.
** Travel around China and photography.
